Hello friends, donors, and volunteers!
Darfur Women Network (DWN) appreciates your commitment as supporters and the resilience of Darfuri women worldwide. Today, I would like to share a story about one of the refugee women, Khadija, from Darfur who joined our Economic Empowerment Project.
Khadija is creative and productive when she finds reasonable resources and has support system within her family. She is the team leader of her group. She travels miles to dig and collect clay and other ingredients to make safe stoves to sell to DWN so she can receive an income.
DWN distributes the stoves that Khadija and others make to refugee mothers for no cost. The population of refugees in the refugee camp we serve is about 24,000. Most of the people in the camp are women and girls.
Thanks to your support, Khadija’s life has changed since she began working on this project. She is now better able to meet the needs of her family. She has even purchased goats to help provide her children with milk. Her work has had a positive impact on her family and community. Darfur Women Network considers Khadija a Social Change Agent because her following impact
- Khadija bettered her life and the lives of her family members
- Khadija helped protect women and girls from rape and violence. The stoves she made use very little wood. Less dangerous treks outside the camp to collect firewood, means greater safety.
- Khadija changed the perception of the community towards women and their vital roles.
This story confirms that never doubt the ability of a small group of committed women. The Darfur Women Network encourages individuals, groups, institutions, and organizations to support and to invest in the survivors of genocide in Darfur to restore their lives and build sustainable peace in Darfur.
